Square slate is the most common shape for a slate roof. The square slates are mounted diagonally on the roof, point down. This type of slate roofing requires the least overlap.
For small and medium sizes, you need about 1.4 m² of roofing slate per m² of roof surface. The laying tables are calculated with a 50 mm overlap for small and medium sizes. For the very largest sizes, the overlap is 100 mm.
Each size of square slate has matching eaves, ridge and gable slates. Eaves and ridge slates have the same shape and size. The gable slate is half a square slate, split vertically from point to point. Because of the position of the fixing holes, gable slates must be specified for the right and left gable.
